Storage Tips
Our storage tips are compiled from real-world storage experience.
You'll find these tips handy if you ever need to place items in storage:
- Use pallets, tarps or plastic sheets on the floor of your storage unit if it is located on the ground floor or accessible from outside to prevent water and moisture damage.
- Promote ventilation to help prevent mold and mildew problems. Don't pack items directly against a wall. Leave an inch or so of space for ventilation. Instead of plastic coverings for furniture, bedding, etc. use old cotton sheets, which won't trap moisture.
- Arrange your items so you can get to your things easily. Keep items you might need to get to often near the front, if possible.
- Consider shelving in your storage unit - attached to the walls if you're permitted, or standalone storage shelving if you're not.
- Place more valuable items toward the back to deter theft - don't advertise that valuables are inside a box. In general, don't store valuable items if you can help it.
- Clean and treat any garden tools and other metal items, like pruning shears, saws, bikes, etc. with a rust inhibitor, such as machine oil, before storing them.
- Drain all gas and oil from trimmers, power mowers, trimmers, weed whackers and blowers, and other items that use gas and oil.
- Use the tops of dressers as a base for stacking boxes and put smaller items inside dresser drawers.
