Moving Pets - Moving Tips
Moving your pets can be one of the most stressful parts of a move - for both of you. But if you take the time to plan ahead and take a few simple precautions, your animal companions will happily settle into their new home.
Here are a few suggestions that might help you when moving:
- Invest in a sturdy pet carrier. Visit a pet store and buy a 'crate' sized for your animal. When you get it home, place a familiar item such as a blanket or chew toy inside so your pet starts getting used to it.
- Update your pet's ID tag with your new address and phone number and put them on right before you move. Pets can be ingenious with escape tactics and an id is vital to get them back to you if they stray during the move.
- Tell your veterinarian that you’re moving your pets and get medication prescriptions filled. The vet can also recommend a mild tranquilizer, if needed, for the trip.
- Keep your pets inside on the day of the move. Put them in a space such as the garage and hang a 'Do Not Open" sign on the door to keep the movers from accidentally opening it.
- Don't give your pets any food or water for a few hours before the move. Their nerves will be reacting to the change in routine, and you don't want them throwing up in your lap as soon as you hit the throughway.
